Your Letters

Over the years we have learned that listeners to NPR's The Thistle & Shamrock are neither shy nor retiring, if the sheer volume of mail is anything to go by. Sharing a little about themselves and giving us insight into the role music plays in their lives, they have created a real listening community. The importance of radio to individuals everywhere resonates through these selected excerpts, and this obviously endures even in our downloadable, podcastable, multi-channel age. Thanks to everyone who has ever taken the time to write to us.

We'll excerpt one special e-mail or letter each month and send a CD of an artist heard on our radio program to say thanks for every one we feature. We're always pleased to hear from you at: The Thistle & Shamrock, PO Box 518, Matthews, NC 28106 USA or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"Congratulations on your excellent show. As a native Irishman your show spans time and distance and bring much joy."
J.S., Renton, WA
"The program and music is a sheer delight. Thank you for your time and love which you so obviously give to the world via Thistle & Shamrock."
B.B., Rockport, ME
"Well, I have been listening to, and admiring the Thistle & Shamrock long enough -- it’s time to write to you and thank you for the tremendous program! It is such a treat to tune into your show each week. The thematic arrangement of the program has brought forth some wonderful combinations of musical styles and artists. I particularly like hearing some of the lesser known Celtic music, that of the Shetland Isles, and of Wales, Cornwall, and Brittany."
D.B., Wrightsville Beach, NC
"Thank you for the fine work you do in presenting Thistle & Shamrock each week. The program is one of the reasons I am a supporter of public radio."
T.G., Oklahoma City, OK
"The eternal problem with television or any other entertainment medium is to continue giving the audience what it likes without stagnating and being afraid to try something new. You succeed admirably in that I never know quite what to expect, except a pleasant surprise."
J.G., Huntington, WV
"The purpose of this letter is to thank you for the fine show you produce. Before you came on, I never heard this music unless I went out and collected it at great expense. When I started my homestead without electricity I thought I was giving up every last comfort. You can imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered you on my transistor radio….This music really needs you and you are to be encouraged and praised for presenting it in such a way that the public gains a better appreciation of it….I hope you are getting a thousand worshipful letters like this each week. I hope your sponsors are getting ten thousand praising their good taste in keeping you on the air."
K.M., Glendora, CA
"Despite my great love of classical music, yours is the one program I regret missing the most, when I have to miss anything…..In addition to the refreshingly different music on the program, the background information given to introduce the music helps to bring it to life….There’s something exciting about driving along a road winding through the Sierra Nevada or up the Oregon coast, looking out at the wild land and hearing this wild-sounding music (Wild in a good sense, of course.)"
L.S., Scottville, MI
"I just have to let you know that there’s a small population of punk kids who love your show. I mean, we’re not totally punk, but we’re sort of a combination of punk and Celtic traditional, that’s the only way I can think of to describe us. A few of my friends and I, we have just as much fun jigging to reels a t a folk festival as we do dancing at a rock concert!"
J.T., Cincinnati, OH
"I have enjoyed your program for years now, and you have taught me many things about Irish and Scottish music. I am an artist, a painter, and I listen & paint when your show’s on as much as possible. I would like to thank you for your most unique and enjoyable show and I commend you on your most recent 200th show. It is a program I always look forward to, as do many of my friends."
P.S. Northridge, CA
"I have wanted to let you know how much we at the hospital enjoy your program. We use tapes of it to teach music appreciation group in Day Treatment and in-patient psychiatric patients. We have also used it at special celebrations and at parties and lunch time."
