Your Letters

Over the years we have learned that listeners to NPR's The Thistle & Shamrock are neither shy nor retiring, if the sheer volume of mail is anything to go by. Sharing a little about themselves and giving us insight into the role music plays in their lives, they have created a real listening community. The importance of radio to individuals everywhere resonates through these selected excerpts, and this obviously endures even in our downloadable, podcastable, multi-channel age. Thanks to everyone who has ever taken the time to write to us.

We'll excerpt one special e-mail or letter each month and send a CD of an artist heard on our radio program to say thanks for every one we feature. We're always pleased to hear from you at: The Thistle & Shamrock, PO Box 518, Matthews, NC 28106 USA or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"We are delighted that the local APR affiliate, KWGS, is carrying Thistle and Shamrock again! There is something about it that seems to beckon to our roots."
W.K., San Diego, CA
"Your show, ‘The Thistle & Shamrock,’ is my all-time favorite radio broadcast, and has been since I first discovered it years ago. It is the only radio show that I will rearrange my schedule to hear. Your selections are excellent, your accent and voice are musical and charming, and your comments are relevant and add to the interest of the music without being lengthy and intruding on it… I especially enjoyed your 200th broadcast and hope I will hear the 2000th!"
J.Q., Philadelphia, PA
"Your musical selection and commentaries are one of the reasons for my contribution to my local station’s fund raising efforts….Music played on ‘Thistle & Shamrock’ strikes chords deep within me."
B.B., Portland, IN
"I’m writing a note to express my family’s delight with the introduction of your program on WGTE - Toledo, OH. It is our hope that it will become a long lived Saturday night tradition."
S.W., Topanga, CA
"We are hopelessly hooked on your show and cannot leave the house on Saturday evenings because ‘Thistle & Shamrock’ has become such an important part of our lives. Thank you for you excellent work in bringing us such a fine program."
C.B., San Francisco, CA
"I’ve not one drop of Scots blood in me, and I’ve never been to Scotland but oh, the music you play makes me misty-eyed."
L.R., Moscow, ID
"It’s so nice to have a program such as yours conceptually as well as musically. So much of radio programming (mostly commercial) is without any character, concept, cohesion, message, content that matters, etc. Keep up the good job."
D.C., Enid, OK
"I have long been a folk music buff and this is the best program I have heard in years."
T. McQ., Santa Monica, CA
"Much of the program’s charm comes from the mellifluously delivered introductions of Fiona Ritchie. Some program hosts blandly list selections of works; others deliver a pedantic mini-lecture between each work. Ms. Ritchie strikes a nice balance between the two. That she has a beautiful speaking voice is of no small importance, either."
S.J., Lexington, VA
"We cannot convey how much your series of programs has meant to us. It has opened up a whole new horizon of musical interest."
