Your Letters

Over the years we have learned that listeners to NPR's The Thistle & Shamrock are neither shy nor retiring, if the sheer volume of mail is anything to go by. Sharing a little about themselves and giving us insight into the role music plays in their lives, they have created a real listening community. The importance of radio to individuals everywhere resonates through these selected excerpts, and this obviously endures even in our downloadable, podcastable, multi-channel age. Thanks to everyone who has ever taken the time to write to us.

We'll excerpt one special e-mail or letter each month and send a CD of an artist heard on our radio program to say thanks for every one we feature. We're always pleased to hear from you at: The Thistle & Shamrock, PO Box 518, Matthews, NC 28106 USA or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

“Let me begin by saying how much I love the show! I think you’ve been on for twenty years, and I have been a fan ever since I heard the first show back in the early 80’s. I am not Irish by blood…but in my soul I certainly must be. Thanks… and good luck on the next twenty-five years!”

“The Thistle remains, through thick and thin, one of the great joys of my life - If I can be said to be ‘in love’ with anything, then I’m in love with Thistle. Long may you play!”

“Thank you! I greatly enjoy your program and am a regular listener. I do not normally listen to NPR, but your program is the exception. Your program provides a welcome break from the mundane songs and music that we are so often presented with by popular radio. In all my years this is the first time I have ever had the urge to write a ‘fan letter’ of any type. Please keep up the good work, it is appreciated.”
J. Bohnhoff, Northfield, MI
“Another fantastic show - what marvelous sounds - thank you for introducing me to wonderfully diverse music - I wouldn’t miss your show!”

“I cannot explain to you how the Thistle and Shamrock program has brought joy and enlightenment. I am a beginning fiddler and have been a musician and pilot most of my life. The pride of my Irish heritage is deep and rich with the celebration of music. Your program has been a breath of Celtic air since I discovered its existence, and wish to express to you how thankful I am for the gift of music. The knowledge and passion exuded from Mrs. Fiona Ritchie teaches me continually that the music of my ancestors and the influence of modern musicians is alive with, well, life. Thank you.”
B. Lowery, Sylacauga, AL
“I want to tell you how much your program means to me. My family knows that every Saturday night from seven to nine pm they’re not to disturb me unless it’s an emergency, because I’m listening to your show…..I hope The Thistle & Shamrock will be around for many more years with you as our gracious host.”
M. Potvin, email
