Your Letters

Over the years we have learned that listeners to NPR's The Thistle & Shamrock are neither shy nor retiring, if the sheer volume of mail is anything to go by. Sharing a little about themselves and giving us insight into the role music plays in their lives, they have created a real listening community. The importance of radio to individuals everywhere resonates through these selected excerpts, and this obviously endures even in our downloadable, podcastable, multi-channel age. Thanks to everyone who has ever taken the time to write to us.

We'll excerpt one special e-mail or letter each month and send a CD of an artist heard on our radio program to say thanks for every one we feature. We're always pleased to hear from you at: The Thistle & Shamrock, PO Box 518, Matthews, NC 28106 USA or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the support you have given me. Many other radio presenters have heard my music on your show and have requested copies of "The Love Token." I appreciate the very positive chain reaction you have started for me in America." MacDara.
Joan Baez, Woodland, CA

“Just a note to thank you for a great show. There is something about this music that makes the heart soar and the soul to understand that this is it, what music is supposed to feel like.”

“I have listened to NPR for several years now, and am a big fan of classical music. This Saturday night, though, I tuned in and was rewarded by a most welcome discovery. I found a Celtic goldmine. I cannot imagine how I have gone all these years without knowing your show was on the air.”

K. Schuerch, email
“I just wanted to send you a quick note to tell you how much I enjoy your show. I listen as often as I can, and am always thrilled by your masterful selections, the flow of the music you choose, and the pure joy of listening to music from The Old Countries.”
J. Tuthill, email
“I enjoy your show immensely, though I only get to listen to it occasionally. It is a breath of fresh air in these dark political and social times.”
R. Richards, Lancaster, PA
“Thistle & Shamrock is one of the things that helps keep me sane in the midst of all the talk of war and terrorism. Thank you to all of you who are involved in its production.”
